  • I’m a writer, too!

On 12.01.09, I estimated that I had about 32,000 words left to write to complete my first draft of the opening book in my paranormal mystery series, THE LOST & FOUND.

    Here's my progress updated 2.12.10:

    33% of 32,000 (10,648 wds)

Last day to sign up for the Inner Critic workshop and the first session of Content Builder for Bloggers! (plus, $25 savings if you register for the whole series)

I have a few spaces still open in two classes, and registration ends this weekend for both of them. Don’t delay!

Silencing the Critic [WRAIN 500] is an interactive online workshop where participants share their struggles in dealing with those voices inside them that keep them from being the most creative people they can be. We all have an inner critic; mine has the voice of a friend who made a judgmental comment about some new work I’d done at a tender moment in the development of my craft… I’ve heard her voice ever since. No one can completely excommunicate their inner critic; however, together, we can find ways to strip them of their influence. This workshop is all about creative problem-solving and shared solutions.

Content Builder for Bloggers [WRAIN 303 series] is a series of three 3-session workshops that can be taken “a la carte” or as a package. These are what I call Theory/Practice workshops: I give you the theory behind the development of certain kinds of content, and then your job is to apply that content in practice to your own blogs. This is one way I can practically guarantee that you will have at least one new blog post a week while you’re enrolled! Students interact with each other by way of comments directly applied at your blog site, so not only do you get the practice of writing new kinds of blog content, but you have the opportunity to gain new readers and heighten the interactivity of your blog. If this appeals to you, I can make two recommendations:

  • Sign up for the first 3 sessions now (TODAY IS THE DEADLINE!) and try it out. If you like the experience, you can sign up for consecutive sessions as you go along. Or,
  • Sign up for the entire series (9 sessions in total) and save $25.  This offer expires today!

Registration Open! “Rabbit’s Hat” Online Workshop

MRC 101B: Rabbit’s Hat: (for magical realist writers) Sign up here
Level: intermediate
Duration: Three sessions of generative writing aided by prompts
Format: Online/NonInteractive
Dates:  September 17 through October 1 (Thurs)
Description:In this three-week online workshop, you’ll use your time generating new work and learning strategies for incorporating literary magical realism into your prose. Participants are expected to submit 1-3 new drafts (a total of 3,000 words) for review over the course of this workshop and will receive weekly prompts to get them started. I will offer my feedback on what works, what could be improved, what questions might linger, and how well you were able to capture elements of magical realism. My aim is to nurture your understanding of literary magical realism so that it becomes a natural and organic direction for your writing.
This class is appropriate for writers who are somewhat familiar with literary magical realism or speculative fiction. My specific focus will be on assisting writers in generating new work that shows a mastery of literary magical realism. Handouts will offer writing strategies and some light supplemental reading. This class is limited to 8 members and will meet with me through a private platform online. There is an orientation period so that participants can familiarize themselves with the platform (which is pretty easy to use). There is no live chat session for this workshop; the focus for now is to learn by doing; that is, generating new magical realist work and acquiring new tools for honing those skills. This workshop will be offered again in February 2010.

Description: In each of these three-week online sessions, you’ll use your time generating new content for your blog based upon prompts with lessons delivered weekly in email. Participants are expected to post 1 new entry to their blog following each weekly prompt within that week and report the permalink to that entry for review by other participants. Participants will be encouraged to read and respond to their peers’ posts onsite (comments must be enabled). I will also post comments to participants’ blog sites and offer additional feedback in email regarding the success of their posts. My aim is to help bloggers generate a stable of ideas they can turn to again and again to keep their blogs rich in content and useful/appealing to their readers. You don’t have to wing it every time. Sometimes a little planning ahead can also make blogging less time-intensive and unwieldy for those who are also working full time or who otherwise cannot blog full time.
This class is appropriate for bloggers who have already set up functioning and publicly accessible blogs. Comments must be enabled by participants so that they can enjoy and learn from the interaction of their workshop peers. Photos and video will be discussed as part of the effectiveness as content, but this workshop is primarily focused on textual content. This class is limited to 6 members and will meet with me initially through a private platform online. Bloggers will give me their blog URLs at time of registration so that I may review them for suggestions I will send to bloggers individually. There is an orientation period so that participants can familiarize themselves with the platform (which is pretty easy to use). There is no live chat session for this workshop; all interaction should take place at participants’ blog sites (in comments). This workshop is intended to not only give bloggers more ideas for content, but to support “blog love” through interaction with others’ blogs and to celebrate the diversity of blogging available on the Internet.
Instructor will send generative prompts on Saturdays; “homework” will consist of bloggers posting new blog entries based on the prompts at their own blogs plus viewing and commenting on other students’ blogs. Instructor will also comment on each new post generated, both live at blog sites and privately.
Each three-session workshops can be taken individually, or you may sign up for all 3 workshops for a discount. These workshops will be offered again in April, May, and June 2010.
Class Min/Max: 3/6
Texts/materials: Announced once class is filled
Price/Payment Form: $75 per session; all 3 for $200 (save $25)
